Discount Pall Mall cigarettes are a brand of cigarettes produced by R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and internationally by British American Tobacco at multiple sites.

Pall Mall cigarettes brand were introduced in 1899 by the Butler & Butler Company, in an attempt to cater to the upper class with the first "premium" cigarette. Its name is taken from a 17th century game, paille-maille, a predecessor to croquet, in which a player attempts to drive a wooden ball with a mallet down an alley and through a raised ring using as few strokes as possible; derived from Latin palla and malleus, or "ball" and "hammer", respectively. Pall Mall cigarette is also the name of a very upscale street in the West End of London.

In 1907, Pall Mall cigarettes were acquired by American Tobacco with the sale of Butler & Butler. The new owners used the premium brand to test innovations in cigarette design, such as the "king-size" (now the standard size for cigarettes at 85mm), a new way of stuffing tobacco that supposedly made cigarettes easier on the throat.

Pall Mall coupons reached the height of their popularity in 1960 when they were the number one brand of cigarettes in America. The gambles in design had paid off and so the company introduced "longs", or 100 mm cigarettes (again creating a standard, this time for long cigarettes). It would later be dethroned in 1966 by Winston cigarettes, when Pall Mall cigarettes found that it could no longer compete with the advertising campaign "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should." Ironically, in the 1940s, Pall Mall cigarettes had its own grammatically incorrect slogan which touted it as the cigarette which "travels the smoke further", referencing the longer 85mm length.

In 1994, discount Pall Mall cigarettes and Lucky Strike cigarettes were purchased by Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation as the former American Tobacco company shed its tobacco brands. Brown & Williamson merged with R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company on July 30, 2004, with the surviving company taking the name, R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. R. J. Reynolds continues to make unfiltered and filtered styles of Pall Mall cigarettes for the U.S. market, emphasizing the latter. British American Tobacco makes and sells Pall Mall cigarettes outside the U.S.

Pall Mall cigarettes currently is in the "Growth Brand" segment of the R.J. Reynolds brand portfolio. Within British American Tobacco, Pall Mall cigarettes is one of their four drive brands. During the late-2000s recession, Pall Mall cigarettes was marketed as a "premium product at a sub-premium price", which pushed the product from a 1.95 percent market share with a 1.6 billion quarterly volume in 2006 to 7.95 percent and 5.5 billion in third quarter 2010. This compares with top-seller Camel, which has not performed as well over the period, with 8 percent share and 5.6 billion.

The famous Pall Mall cigarettes logo has large art nouveau lettering spelling out "Pall Mall" on the top front of the pack. On the face is a white coat of arms on the front and back of the pack. Showing two regal lions pawing the sides and a knight's helmet on top, the inside of the shield reads "Per aspera ad Astra" or "Through the thorns to the stars" (which resembles the motto of the RAF, "Per ardua ad astra", or "Through adversity to the stars"). There is a banner underneath the shield that holds another Latin phrase, "In hoc signo vinces" or "By this sign shall you conquer". The phrase was the one that appeared in a vision to Constantine before the Battle of Milvian Bridge where he was greatly out-numbered. God instructed Constantine to put the cross on all the shields of his men. The next day, Constantine was in Rome, victorious, paving the way for the Edict of Milan. The famous Pall Mall cigarettes slogan, "Wherever Particular People Congregate", appears beneath the coat of arms.

Generally speaking, there are different designs for Pall Mall cigarettes packs. It can be always identified on which market one or another pack of Pall Mall cigarettes was bought. Nevertheless, the logo and the main features of it remain unchanging.

The cigarette's name is correctly pronounced with the rhyming couplet "pell mell," as made evident in old television and radio advertisements. Pall Mall cigarettes and its sister brand Lucky Strike cigarettes were sponsors of the Jack Benny radio and television programs, and histories of the show recount how the American Tobacco company would dispatch numerous publicists to instruct the cast and staff of the correct pronunciation. With the dissipation of cigarette advertising, first with bans on radio, then television, the pronunciation has found a decidedly generational tone. Those who lived in the era of the audible advertisements pronounce it "pell mell" while those who have only the visual title of the packaging to refer to often use the increasingly more common phonetic "paul maul" Wacky Packages spoofed the brand as "Paul Maul Peculiar Cigarettes."

Discount Pall Mall cigarettes in Norway - in King Size plain and filter versions - represents one of the Group's most successful Scandinavian operations. In August the pack design of the filter brand was changed, and we now hear that this operation (which is never without an element of risk) appears to have been carried out without any negative consumer response.

Norway is an unusual market in that roll-your-own cigarette smoking dominates the market. The manufactured cigarette market totals about 150 million a month of which BAT brands make up around 30%. Pall Mall cigarettes Plain sells an average of about 23 million a month, while Filter Pall Mall cigarettes sells well over 15 million.

Norway was one of those markets which were slow to swing to filters, and when our two Pall Mall cigarettes were launched a few years back it was the plain version which caught on most dramatically. The market is now showing a more rapid swing to filters (now about 55% of the total) and Filter Pall Mall cigarettes is highly progressive.

Riding on the back of our brands is Rothmans Pall Mall cigarettes which retailers tend to put on display next to the BAT versions. Known to the public as "White Pall Mall", it is also progressive, though far behind in volume. In the European Sea/Air Stores trade a third BAT version, Superlong Pall Mall Filters cigarettes, has become widely known among Scandinavians who cross on the short-sea-route ferries between the countries casually and frequently. Whereas Norway's KSFT Pall Mall cigarettes had a pack design based on the old plain pack, but with the addition of a gold band, the Superlong version had a more modern and attractive design of red and gold.

I. E. D. felt that it would be a logical step to bring these two filter versions into line with each other, giving a more attractive look to the KSFT brand in Norway, and giving it an extra edge over the Rothmans product. It was also felt that the ideal time to make the change was when the brand was at its most buoyant. The design changeover took effect in August with full advertising support - national and provincial newspapers, color magazines, posters, and a strong merchandising/p-o-s effort.

This included the concentration of our Agent's full Field Force on the project for a 5-week period. Latest reports show that the new pack has been well received, both by the trade and consumers, and that there appears to have been no suspicion in the consumer's mind that the cigarette had been changed in any way. The similarity of design to that of Superlong Pall Mall Filter cigarettes has proved to have been recognized, some few consumers thinking initially that the Superlong version had been put on domestic sale. Our illustration of one advertising item shows the way in which the changeover was announced - a series of pack illustrations each of which progressively reveals more of the new design.

Copy promises "still the finest taste from the U. S. A." (the international campaign's copy line of "the smoothest taste" cannot, it appears, be satisfactorily adapted into Norwegian). The changeover advertising is scheduled to run during the rest of this year, to give way to a new campaign about which we hope to be able to tell you in a later issue.
